When this trilogy published a few years ago, it received criticism as pornography targeted for women. I think it is merely a fairytale with BDSM elements.

Firstly, Ana, the female protagonist, processes all the virtues like others traditional female characters in fairytales. She is innocent, an ordinary college student and a virgin. She is not the gold digger like other evil characters in fairytales who loves the “prince” for his money. And for Christian, he is the typical male with strong physical traits and wealth. He is portrayed as charming, aims at pleasuring Ana during their sexual engagement. He is able to give many expensive presents like the blackberry, an original copies of Hardy, Macbook and two Audi to Ana.

Throughout the series, Christian often imposes control on Ana on if she had eaten anything, who is going out and even forbids her to go on a business trip with her male boss. Although the background of the series is not in domestic area, Ana falls into the patriarchal expectations on women. At the end of the story, Ana is able to “tame” Christian ’s dark side and lives happily with their kids. Irrespective of Ana’s likening, she indeed gains her social status and money from marrying Christian. Also, it is true that Ana still works but the company she is working is brought by Christian. Again, it shows that Ana is under constant control of Christian despite having a happy ending with him.
